With the recent growth in popularity of cloth diapers, what are the pros and cons of cloth diapers as opposed to disposables? Parents can be quite divided on this topic, so we will try to list the advantages and disadvantages of each type of diaper.

As the average baby will need about 5000 diapers, this is a very important thing to consider. A decision to use cloth diapers will not only have a great impact on your baby’s comfort and health,  it will also have financial and environmental consequences for you.

1. Cloth Diapers:

Cloth diapering has been around since the dawn of time. The material has obviously developed over time, and some cloth diapers now even have double o

r triple layers and a multiple, fiber-filled strip, making them much more absorbent than older styles.

For:-

Cheaper – cloth diapers can be expensive at the start, but in the long run they should work out more economical, depending on what source you choose.

Diaper-rash -  cloth-diapered babies tend to have less diaper-rash, because natural cotton fibers ‘breathe’ more easily.

Recycle – can be used for other children, so works out even cheaper if you are planning a large family!

Also cloth diapers don’t go to landfill.

Potty – cloth diapered children tend to potty-train earlier, because the cloth tends to hold moisture closer to baby’s skin.

Against:-

Diaper Pins – usually fastened with diaper pins, but now you can also find ones with Velcro or snap fasteners.

Creche – some daycare centers may refuse to allow children attending with cloth diapers.

Travel – can be messy to use on the go, and are not appropriate for travel. (Many cloth-diaper users will use disposables when traveling, or just being out and about.)

Leaking – cloth diapers may leak more than disposables, especially if not used as they shoulld be.

2. Disposable Diapers:

Disposable diapers have been around in a major way since the late sixties. Their popularity grew with technology advances over the years, and they have seen many changes.

For:-

Easy to use – disposables are definitely the easy option. They are an all-in-one product, handy nd fast to use.

Disposable – disposables are thrown away once used, unlike cloth diapers which naturally need to be washed.

Portable – easy to travel with as per above.

Tight and Snug – disposables tend to leak less than cloth. They have a tight, snug fit and are very absorbent.

Against:-

Cost – as they are disposable, you will need to buy more regularly and you will probably spend more on disposables.

Not Green – badd for the environment, it is estimated that around 6 million tons of untreated waste is deposited into landfills due to disposable diapers every year. Disposable diapers take a very long time to decompose.

Potty – harder to potty-train as toddlers cannot feel the wetness as much as with cloth diapers, so it’s harder for them to potty-train.

Diaper-rash – according to one study, 78% of kids using disposable diapers get diaper-rash, compared to only 8% of cloth-diapered babies.

Baby health -  this is now the biggest concern as the chemicals used to make the super-absorbency of disposable diapers is generally sodium polyacrylate, which has been linked to TSS (Toxic Shock Syndrome) and can cause allergic reactions.

Overall, the decision to use disposable diapers or cloth diapers is a very personal one. There is no one right answer for everyone. Also, should I bring 1 regular diaper bag (for clean diapers, ointment, wipes) and 1 waterproof bag (for soiled)?
Should I bring flushable/biodegradable liners, as well?
Thank you!

Forgot to add that I’m due with our first on April 11th. New to cloth diapering.

I love these wipes! They are nice and thick… just like the competitors. Because they are fragrance free, these wipes are perfect for my 8 month old baby. I also use them as toddler wipes for my four year old. Use ‘em to wipe up faces, messes and everything else. The case is also fabulous. The flexible opening means that I won’t get my fingers scratched when I have to pull a wipe out because it fell into the tub. The cover on the box comes off completely so the tub can be reused for other purposes – like organizing toys and other baby products. Of course, you should probably refill it with more Comforts for Baby wipes. The wipes are available at your local Kroger/Ralph’s. Though you probably won’t find coupons for the wipes, use your Ralph’s card and get them for .49. I’m a BzzAgent and I received this product to facilitate my review from BzzAgent.

    Article by GERALD ROSARIO

Pregnancy might be one of the most electric times of a woman’s lifetime, but it can be hard to find clothes that you feel groovy wearing as your pregnancy progresses. There are some important things to keep in mind whilst you are purchasing maternity clothes.

    1. Hold off on purchasing maternity clothes until about your 2nd trimester. Yes, you are excited as anything about the pregnancy but for the majority of women, you will not begin to show until the second trimester. For the 1st three months, most of your clothes except the tightest ones, will continue to fit perfectly well. If you are having multiples, however, you might want to shop sooner. 2. Get at least a few maternity pants or skirts before you need them, however. Often, there is a rapid growth spirt about the 2nd trimester (for a single-baby pregnancy) in which in the span of a few days or a week, your regular pants will suddenly not fit. You will have to have enough clothing to at least get by till you can go shopping.

    3. Make use of a “belly button”. Even before you race out to get maternity clothes, it is a good thought to purchase a belly button, which is a simple device consisting of elastic with buttons. It enables you to widen jeans and skirts a little (or a lot later on) and then you can pull these on over the increasing bump. Cover with a long shirt, top or t-shirt and nobody will be any the wiser. (The “belly button” may not permit you to wear non-maternity clothes indefinitely, however, so start thinking about buying real maternity clothes!)

    4. Shop at maternity clothing on-line stores. Besides, if you’re a petite, a plus-size, tall, or otherwise difficult to outfit you’ll be more likely to find clothes in a maternity clothing store than at a regular clothing retail store. Most sizes are based on your pre-pregnancy size but brands will vary.

    5. Be mindful that great quality maternity wear is designed to last through the nine months of a pregnancy and will stretch with you. It is best to buy two very good items than a dozen cheap ones to guarantee this long-lived durability and quality.

    6. Experiment with clothing styles. Your shape is changing and so is what you will look great wearing.

    7. Select clothes for their stretch capability without the material appearing that it is stretched.8. Wear maternity clothes that look and feel good. Maternity clothes have come a long way in fashion since your mother’s pregnancy; you don’t need to wear unsightly clothing just because you’re a mother-to-be. 9. Avoid itchy or man-made material where possible as your hormones will only help you feel itchier, stickier and hotter than usual! Most maternity clothes will comprise lycra or spandex for stretch potential, but be sure whenever doable choose clothing with a natural fabric blend.

    10. Purchase the matching size that you were pre-pregnancy. If that size doesn’t appear to fit, trust your judgment and buy a size bigger or smaller. (However, if in doubt, get bigger!)

    11. Choose a number of various styles and fits to try. Pants, in particular, come with a number of different types of stretch panels, and will frequently fit and feel different. Also, as you advance in your pregnancy, it may not be merely your stomach that grows, but also your posterior and hips.

    12. Get nursing bras (a bra that allows you to uncover one breast at a time) about the last trimester if you are planning on breastfeeding. They are convenient and easy to use in public places. Make sure when pregnant to go to a lingerie store and get measured a couple of times as your bra sizing will fluctuate during your pregnancy, this will afford you the most comfortable maternity bra.

    13. Consider nursing clothes for the breast-feeding mother-to-be. These things (mostly shirts, but also camisoles and dresses) have openings that make it easier to nurse, particularly in public. Nursing sleepwear also makes for less disrobing at nighttime feedings. But, it is better to check how your existing clothes work before spending too much cash on these specialised things – a lot of modern clothes work well without special features.

    14. Repeat as required: as you advance into your pregnancy, you might find certain purchases just didn’t work out as you thought. There’s several reasons for this, including how you’re carrying your baby and how your shape changes during pregnancy. It’s hard to foresee these things weeks or months in advance. Don’t think you someway failed in maternity shopping if a pair of pants that were comfortable for weeks all of a sudden become uncomfortable. So be careful not to think you’ll finish all your shopping in one weekend, or otherwise purchase all your wardrobe at once.
